Most of Abraham Lincoln's Presidency was filled with the bloodshed of a tragic and terrible Civil War. But when Robert E. Lee surrendered the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia on April 9, 1865, the end was in sight. Lincoln never lived to see an "official peace" - he was struck down by an assassin on April 14 and died the next day.
